Civil Engineering programme and staff at GMIT reaping great rewards

The Civil Engineering programme in the Department of Building and Civil Engineering in GMIT is making great strides and its lecturers have been identified for their teaching practice as part of a student-led National Awards initiative recently. If you are interested in a career in Civil Engineering, make enquiries at GMIT. You will not be disappointed.

Dr Shane Newell is a core lecturer on the Civil Engineering programmes and rightfully received a student-nominated 2020 Teaching Hero Award from the National Forum in April 2021. Well done Shane!

Dr Wayne Gibbons has been creating some brilliant pod-casts on the profession of Civil Engineering, entitled 'Being Civil'. The guests are mainly graduates from the GMIT course, ranging from around the mid-2000s up to about 2017, so far. One of the most recent episodes was commissioned by Engineers Ireland for use as part of the Engineers Week. For that episode, Engineers Ireland put a call out to secondary school students for questions they would like to ask Civil Engineering students. Two GMIT first year student class representatives took part in a conversation in which they answered those questions. We feel it turned out to be a great episode as it centres on the student-voice in terms of both the questions asked and the answers given.

HDip in Civil Engineering

GMIT launched a new work-based Higher Diploma in Civil Engineering (Level 8) in October 2020. The programme is aimed at graduates from the Honours degree civil engineering programme in GMIT who would like to pursue the professional title of Chartered Engineer (CEng) from Engineers Ireland in the near future. The programme consists of two modules and is delivered using blended learning to provide flexibility for the student and allow one to manage the learning process. The programme is structured to enable the student to achieve specific learning outcomes whilst in the workplace. Research has shown that the employment and salary prospects of Chartered Engineers are significantly improved in comparison to an untitled engineer. The proposed programme is based on a partnership between GMIT, the student (who is in employment) and the employer.
